Last week John McCain said of Barack Obama: "Obama would lose a war to win an election." First of all setting aside for a moment that since there is no definition of a "win," there can't be any definition of a "loss." This is a baseless, unfounded statement that impugns Barack Obama's integrity and patriotism.
McCain is advocating an extension of Bush's policies, that includes continuing the war in Iraq indefinitely, for up to 100 years he said. Those very same policies have directly led to the economic mess that we are in now. Continuing these policies can only lead to the continuing devaluation of the dollar, and the ballooning of the deficit. which in turn is going to dig us into a deeper hole than we are in now.
We need a president that will get us out of this very expensive war, (a trillion dollar war by most estimates), and get us off of this fossil fuel dependency. McCain's position? To drill and provide Americans a "gas tax holiday," both of which, even McCain admits, won't provide any immediate relief other than "psychological." Most economists say that even if we started drilling tomorrow, we wouldn't see any lowering of the price at the pump until around 2030, if even then. As far as the gas tax holiday goes, that tax is what pays for the infrastructure in this country. Suspending the gas tax would actually cause 200,000 people to lose their construction jobs. These are people that make their living off of fixing our roads, that are going to hell even with the gas tax. We need more money going to our infrastructure, not less. And to show how out of touch McCain is, this morning on This Week With George Stephanopoulos, when he was asked how he could make sure that the oil companies would pass the savings on, (an event that most economists say very well might not happen), his first answer was to say, "we would shame them into it." WTF? If the oil companies aren't shamed now when they are making record profits while the average consumer is suffering profoundly from the high price of gas, I seriously they won't be ashamed of taking the tax and keeping it for themselves.
Meanwhile, Obama has proposed spending $150 billion over the next ten years in renewable energy. Most of this money would come from a windfall profits tax on the oil companies. These are the same companies that make $20 - $30 billion per quarter and yet they have to audacity to say that these profits are not out of line. Tell that to the average American who is now having to choose between basic necessities to afford to go to work. Do I buy food or gas? Do I pay my insurance premiums, (if they even have insurance, which is a post for a later date), or do I buy food, or gas? Obama is also against the gas tax holiday and more drilling. As T. Boone Pickens says, " this is one crisis that we can't drill our way out of."
So the truer statement here would be, "McCain would destroy this country to win an election"
